Looking Behind the Label
The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits provides a solid introduction to wine, wine service and food and wine pairing, and explores the most important grape varieties, wine-making regions and wine styles.
It is aimed at beginners who are considering a career in the wine industry, candidates who work with wine on a regular basis or intermediate enthusiasts who want to take their understanding of wine to the next level.
On completion of the course candidates will be able to communicate knowledgeably with customers and operate confidently during wine service, making wine recommendations based on customers preferences and food choices and work credibly with other wine industry professionals. Candidates will have the tools to interpret simple wine lists and make informed choices when making purchases in restaurants and retail outlets.
- Tasting of a range of wines from the most important varieties and wine-making regions including Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Chianti, Rioja, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and less well-known varieties such as Torrontes, Malbec, Albarino, Viognier and Pinotage.
- Sessions dedicated to sparkling wines, sweet wines, fortified wines and spirits.
- An introduction to grape-growing and wine-making that will allow the student to begin to make links as to why wines made from the same grape variety and/or region may be similar or differ in style.
The L2 Award in Wines & Spirits is offered as an online study programme with optional tasting modules. The course concludes with a 1 hour examination consisting of 50 multiple choice questions.
